KICKOFF.TXT

01  KICKOFF MEETING

This is Week 1, so here is the deal: one email on Thursday about what is worth your one free evening in Provo or Orem. No storytimes, no filler. Big stuff, odd stuff, and the parking math.

Friday alone has a festival opening at 6pm, a movie at 6pm, and a band at 7:30. Saturday has a pottery competition at 5pm and a Queen tribute at 8pm, both in Orem. Nobody who scheduled them was looking at the same calendar.

02  THE ASSIGNMENT

Simply Queen plays the SCERA Shell Saturday

Simply Queen takes the SCERA Shell in Orem on Saturday at 8pm, with gates open at 6:30. It is $25 general admission, outdoors, in September, which is the best month that stage gets all year. Bring a jacket for the second half.

This is the top pick because everybody says yes to it: a BYU senior, a UVU commuter, and a couple who moved to Orem for the rent. A tribute set is not a mystery, and that is the point. Nobody needs the words printed.

Gates open ninety minutes before the music. General admission means no assigned seats, so arrival time decides where you sit. Twenty-five dollars is the whole ask for a full outdoor show, and I have not found a better Saturday under thirty dollars this week.

03  THE COURSE LOAD

FRIDAY

Festival Latinoamericano runs four days6 TO 10 PM

Utah County Historic Courthouse, 51 South University Avenue  FREE

Free at the Utah County Historic Courthouse, 51 South University Avenue. Friday runs 6 to 10pm, Saturday and Monday go 10am to 10pm, and Sunday starts at 5:45pm. Four days is the longest run of anything on this list, so pick whichever night your week actually allows.

Art Stroll, Friday, downtown Provo

Various Participating Businesses

Friday evening in downtown Provo, hosted across whatever businesses signed up. The listing posts no start time and no cover, so the date is the only fixed fact. If you want a firm clock, Festival Latinoamericano is free and runs 6 to 10pm the same night.

Mortal American Body at Velour7:30 PM

Velour Live Music Gallery

Friday at 7:30pm at Velour, with tickets through 24tix. The listing posts one band and one start time, and no door price, so plan on paying something rather than assuming it is free. It is the latest posted start of Friday's options, which makes it the one you can eat dinner before.

Foam Party Provo at The Village

The Village Provo

Friday at The Village Provo, and the date is the entire published record: no start time, no cover, no promise that it is free. Treat the listing as the only source and confirm before you drive over. Decide by 6pm whether you own shoes you can hose off, because foam does not negotiate.

Sierra Madre screens at Orem Public Library6 PM

Orem Public Library

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre screens Friday at 6pm at the Orem Public Library, in its classic film series. No admission price is posted, so the listing is the only word on whether it is free. Quietest option on this list, and no end time is posted.

SATURDAY

Pottery Throwdown, free at 5pm Saturday5 PM

SCERA Park pavilion  FREE

Free, Saturday at 5pm, at the SCERA Park pavilion in Orem. A pottery competition outdoors, early enough to be a first stop rather than the whole night. It lands three hours before this week's top pick, so the two of them make one evening if you are willing to eat in between.

ROUGH-DRAFT.TXT

04  ROUGH DRAFT

Road work, next week. This is where the closures go, and the rule here is simple: nothing runs until two independent sources agree on it. This week nothing cleared that bar.

EXTRA-CREDIT.AD

05  EXTRA CREDIT

SPONSORED

Fueled by nobody yet. This slot is where a sponsor goes, and when one is here it will say so in bold at the top of it, every single week. Nobody paid for anything in this issue, including the top pick and the pottery.

If you run something in Provo or Orem that a 22-year-old with one free evening would actually want, email the sponsor slot. I only take places I would tell a neighbor about, and I write the copy myself so it sounds like this.

THE-CURVE.LOG

06  THE CURVE

Friday overlaps, Saturday spreads out

Friday is the pileup. A festival opens downtown at 6pm, a movie starts in Orem at 6pm, and Velour goes at 7:30. Two of those overlap exactly.

Saturday spreads out and mostly moves to Orem. Pottery at 5pm at the SCERA Park pavilion, Simply Queen at 8pm at the Shell, and three hours in between. The festival runs 10am to 10pm at the courthouse on Saturday too.

Monday is the odd one out: the festival keeps those same 10am to 10pm hours, and nothing else on this list runs past Saturday.

Send me the big ones

The list is only as good as what I can find. If you are putting on something in Provo or Orem that a hundred people would turn out for, send it to me.

Date, time, price, address. Corrections get the same address and I will run them in plain text.

TURNED-IN.TXT

08  TURNED IN

Most clicked last week: nothing, because there was no last week. The counter starts now.

Week 1, turned in

Full disclosure: I have never seen a tribute band play outdoors in Orem, and I am going Saturday to find out. Reply and tell me: which of Friday's three are you actually picking?

Send this to somebody who moved apartments in August and still has not unpacked the toaster, then point them at the Group Project sign-up. Week 1, turned in on time.

ABOUT-THIS-EMAIL.TXT

THE GROUP PROJECT · WEEK 1

This issue was fueled by nobody yet, and it said so where it happened. Sponsorships are always labeled.

Study Group: forward this to one neighbor who would actually use it. That is the whole program right now, and it works.
